History

Few families can boast such a long and colourful history as Tiffin. Records show that Tiffin was established in 1695 after a member of the Tiffin family invented a compound to eliminate bed bugs which was so successful that a thriving business soon developed.

The company enjoyed royal patronage over the centuries holding the impressive titles of Insect Destroyer to Their Majesties George II, III, IV and to Queen Victoria, hence the reference in the illustrated Thomas Rowlandson print of “T. Tiffin, Bugg Destroyer to His Majesty.” At the bottom of this print are the words “with acknowledgement to Britain’s oldest pest control company.”

In the 1930’s timber treatment was added to Tiffin’s services and in the 1940’s the treatment of dry and wet rot. The 1950’s saw further development in damp proofing skills. In 1965 and 1974 Tiffin’s acquired two long established building companies, and with these acquisitions the Tiffin Group was able to offer a complete building and general property care service as well as its traditional preservation skills.

Towards the end of century and between the 1980’s and 2000 Tiffin’s added their cellar seal service waterproofing to underground cellars and vaults, a Corporate care service to international companies with their own property portfolios and Programmed Term maintenance service.

From 2000 to present day the focus is to maintain our core expertise and embrace the demand of the modern homeowner, to include makeovers, to create open plan living sensitivity to the existing housing stock and listed buildings.

The company has remained a ‘family’ firm for over 320 years, and to this day there has always been a Tiffin at the helm.
